Almost everyone has a few bike parts lying around; things they have left over after upgrading a bike which are still usable and would be a waste to throw out. It’s amazing how quickly they can mount up. Given enough time these parts in the garage, in draws and cupboards start looking like most of a bike.
The beauty of a single speeder is that due to its simplicity you don’t have to worry about parts compatibility – whether the derailleur will work with a particular brand of shifter, or whether a 9/10/11 speed chain is compatible with your cassette. In fact the less color / brand / model co-ordinated the better. It’s not contrived, not hip or fashionable…it just is.
You don’t need an expensive frame or wheels for single speeding. In fact the complete opposite. So why not make the most of the investment in the parts you have already spent money on, giving them a second life. Perhaps adding a new bike to the fleet for little or no money outlaid. That’s reason enough for me!
